Gozo Ministry Runs initiatives to protect maritime environment

Malta Independent Monday, 15 August 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

The Emergency Rescue Response Corps in Gozo is running various initiatives under Green Wave and GASART (Gozo Aquatic Search and Rescue Team) linked to the promotion and protection of the maritime environment, and an educational campaign to improve awareness about health and safety at sea, especially among children.

It is funding the activities through a €50,000 grant under a Gozo Ministry scheme for NGOs involved in the eco-Gozo action plan.

Under its initiatives the ERRC will be cleaning up the seabed including in zones used by divers. They will also be cooperating with some 300 fishermen in Gozo to retrieve fishing nets caught in the seabed, which are harming fish. Children at Skola Sajf are also being educated about the maritime environment and diving sessions are being given by the ERRC to disabled persons. A lifeguard and other emergency services are to be provided at Comino and in some bays in Gozo.

The information was given at an activity attended by Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono.
