Malta Independent Tuesday, 16 August 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

The champions and FA Trophy winners of last season will be facing each other again this evening as they battle it out for the Super Cup – the official opening match of the new season.

The match is being played at Ta’ Qali national stadium and kicks off at 8.30pm.

It will be the second match already this season between the two sides – they had met in the Euro Cup clash in June, when Valletta had emerged winners 2-1.

Both sets of supporters are expected to be back in full force this evening at Ta’ Qali – probably as was the case in May when they last met ‘officially’ in the FA Trophy final, that is, when Floriana scored a last gasp winner.

A match between the citizens and their city and suburban rivals never fails to capture huge interest among local football followers. One sincerely appeals to both sets of fans to behave properly. They should support their sides from start to finish but never indulge in insults which could lead to disorder at the stadium.

Although Valletta have started the season on a more positive note than the Greens, it is obvious that in a match like today’s, there rarely in a favourite.

This is the 28th edition of the Super Cup, with holder Valletta seeking to win it for a 10th time. Floriana have only won it on one occasion.

The stadium doors will be opening two hours priot to kick-off, that is at 6.30pm. Supporters are reminded that only the Millennium Stand will be open as works are currently underway at the opposite West Stand. VIP ticket-holders are to enter from the VIP zone at the Millennium Stand E Sector.

Tickets will be available today from the ticket booths at Ta’ Qali National Stadium and are as follows: €6 adults, €4 KartaAnzjan and children under 12 years of age pay €1.

List of Super Cup winners

Valletta - 9; Hamrun Spartans and Birkirkara - 5 each, Sliema Wanderers - 3, Rabat and Hibernians - 2 each, Floriana 1.
