First Positive result for Exiles, in this round

Malta Independent Wednesday, 17 August 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

A flurry of late goals made this match a more interesting one, after Exiles had opened up a four goal advantage, and seemed to have the game sewn up. These were the first points obtained by Exiles, in the top division, and leaves them with the faintest of hopes of evading the bottom rung of the league ladder. To do this they have to obtain results against both the Balluta bay clubs, in their last two matches. Sirens’ defeat also prohibits them from challenging Sliema for the third place spot, with the Blues sure of that position.

John Paris is still in his three week suspension for Exiles. The two sides cancelled each other out till the interval, in a low score 3-3 score, but after the break Exiles forged in front, with a four goal burst, to go into the last session 7-4 ahead. They were pretty sure, midway through the session, as they led 9-5, but Sirens made a last ditch effort, and they clawed back to a single goal deficit. Their mentor, Predrag Zimonjic, fashioned a penalty against his side, in the closing seconds, in a last throw of the dice, but Exiles converted their shot. Still, Sirens managed to slot home the game’s last goal, just seconds from the final buzzer.

Exiles converted both their measly two man ups, and Marco Cuk finished up with a poker of goals. Sirens also had Csaba Kiss with four strikes, but their numerical advantages were non existent, with a paltry single goal in eight man ups.
