Greed

Malta Independent Tuesday, 23 August 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

I have been reading a number of articles in The Malta Independent on the Catholic clergy sex abuse scandal. Here in the United States, the news media has woefully neglected an emerging side of the scandal that up to now has remained hidden. It’s the story of priests being falsely accused for the guarantee of a financial windfall from a Church cowed into uncorroborated mediated settlements. I know many Catholics who were angry about the scandal until they became aware of the extent to which their priests and their Church have been subjected to rampant fraud. One such case was profiled in a two-part article in The Wall Street Journal by Pulitzer Prize winning journalist Dorothy Rabinowitz (A Priest’s Story, 28 April 2005). The priest who was the subject of her articles, Father Gordon MacRae, has published a series of his own entitled When Priests Are Falsely Accused. Here is the link:

Greed ranks right up there with lust among the seven deadly sins, and the American story is quickly turning into a scandal driven by greed.
