Last Sunday saw the Island Car Club, in collaboration with MDRA, hold a pursuit race at Hal Far, in which over 70 drivers battled it out in head to head battles, much to the delight of the onlooking crowd. Pursuit races are popular due to their competitive format pitching two drivers in a head to head battle on a symmetrical track.
The safe, yet challenging, nature of Pursuit Racing attracted a large number of drivers who are not regular competitors but seized the opportunity to try their hand at motorsport, many of them demonstrating admirable driving skills and the wheel of cars that varied from Single seat race cars, to road going performance cars such as Subaru Imprezas and Audi TTs through to classic Jaguars and Lotus.
Cars were matched into pairs and headed onto the track, where they lined up at opposite ends of the circuit.
At the drop of the flag both cars started a two lap run, with the winner being the driver that caught up with the opposing car. The losing driver was eliminated and the winner progressed up the ladder to the next challenge.
As the event progressed spectators were regaled with some spectacular driving with drivers in some runs being as close as a tenth of a second off each other.
Class winners were as follows:
Guest Class: Michael Mangion
Group 1: Zach Zammit
Group 2: Didier Bugeja
Group 3: Edward Calleja
Group 4: Joseph Cutajar
Group 6: Steve Z. Cutajar
The Island Car Club thanked the MDRA for its cooperation in hosting this event.
