Your newspaper has regularly carried items concerning what has been going on in Gozo these past few weeks. We frequently have had news of Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono going from one place to another in a bid to tell the public about the projects – big and small – that are in hand on our island.

I must congratulate the Gozo Ministry for its sterling work. Going around Gozo makes it amply clear that the ministry has been extremely busy in its work to build roads, patch up others, cleaning work and do other things to make Gozo a better place to live in – for us locals and also for our visitors.

I understand that the Gozo Ministry likes to publicise all its doings in the media. What I cannot understand is why there needs to be a mention of ‘eco-Gozo’ every time the minister turns up for some kind of activity. It seems that every little thing that is being done in Gozo is linked to this idea.

But I think that it is having the reverse effect. Mentioning eco-Gozo each and every time has turned the phrase into a cliché, and when this happens things start to lose their meaning.

If a rubble wall is built, there is no need to connect it with eco-Gozo. It would be better if the phrase was used solely for the major projects. I am sure that the ministry will reply that every little thing helps; but at the same time I must point out that when a phrase is repeated over and over again, people tend to lose interest.

“Ah, yes… it’s another one of those,” is what they say, and either switch off the radio or else turn to the next story in the newspaper.

While, once again, praising the Gozo Ministry for its excellent work, I urge it to be more careful in its choice of words, and when to mention ‘eco-Gozo’. It would give the idea of turning Gozo into an ecological island a much deeper and significant meaning.
