Martial Arts: First Maltese Martial Artist awarded 10th Dan Black Belt

Bujinkan Malta founder and chief instructor Mr. Alfred Galea has become the first Maltese Martial Artist to achieve the grade of 10thDan Shihan (Master Teacher).

During his last visit to Japan he trained with various Japanese teachers such as Someia Sensei 15th Dan, Nagato Sensei 15thDan and Soke Masaaki Hatsumi 34th Grandmaster of Togakurey Ryu and Head of the Bujinkan. Alfred founded the Bujinkan Malta Dojo back in 1993, which at that time it was the Bujinkan Brian Dojo under the guidance of Brian Whitaker from the Uk. Later in 1998 he trained under Soke Hatsumi during a training seminar in Italy and became a direct student of Soke Hatsumi. Forming part of the official Bujinkan International, the group became Bujinkan Ninpo Taijutsu Malta.

Mr. Galea carried out his training by going to Japan on alternate years and, in the mean time by practising both in Malta and the Uk under the guidance of Norman Smithers, Shihan 15th Dan. Alfred also trained in Italy, Spain, and Holland with Enzo Rossi 15th Dan, from Italy, Sveneric Bogster 15th Dan from Holland, Thomas Franzin 15th Dan from Holland, and Jesus Eguia 15thDan from Spain.

The Bujinkan is mostly known for the teaching of the Ninja warrior (Ninjutsu), but it also teaches other Japanese Martial Arts such as those of the Samurai, Jutaijutsu (throws and locks) and Kenjutsu (the martial arts of the sword).

During his stay in Japan, Mr. Galea was also awarded the licence to teach Kyudo (Japanese Archery) from Sensei Mark Lithgow Menkyo Kaiden who lives in Japan. The style of Kyudo that Mr. Galea will be teaching is from Heki Ryu Kessa –Ha.

At their dojo (training hall) in Mosta, Bujinkan Malta practice all the nine Schools disciplines, that are taught in the Bujinkan International. Such as Ninja Training (Ninjutsu), Jutaijutsu (throws, locks and strangles), Kenjutsu (swordsmanship), and now introducing Heki Ryu Kessa –Ha Kyudo (Japanese archery).
