Malta Independent Wednesday, 31 August 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

During the summer months the sports facilities at Stella Maris College, Gzira are undergoing a major facelift following an investment of € 250, 000.

The existing facilities had been built in 1978 while a decade later all facilities were tarmaced. The Senior School Sports Complex will include a synthetic rubber basketball court and volleyball court as well as two five-a-side artificial turf pitches. A four-lane 200-metre track has also been designed apart from facilities for long jump and shot put.

The Junior School will include two five-a-side artificial pitches as well as another synthetic rubber court for basketball and volleyball.

St. Benild School in Sliema, that also forms part of the College, will also witness a major development with the installation of a synthetic rubber layer in the school yard apart from having an artificial turf pitch laid on the roof.

Bro. David Mizzi fsc, Director of the College, feels that this is a major milestone in the College’s 108 yearold history: “The Department of Physical Education of our College has been exploring the best possibilities to suit our students’ needs for the past six months. It is of great satisfaction that works are progressing at a fast pace to fulfill our ambition of having some of the top sporting laboratories in Malta.”

This project is being carried out in memory of Bro. Louis Camilleri fsc, who passed away on 29 May following nearly 70 years of loyal and sterling service to the Lasallian community in Malta.

The College is inviting old boys who wish to make a donation towards the project to do so via APS Bank Account no. 20001066276 – Stella Maris Community – Bro. Louis Memorial a/c.

The entire project is expected to be completed in a few days’ time for the beginning of the new scholastic year.
