Training For immigrants

Malta Independent Thursday, 1 September 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Reference is being made to the news report, ‘Migration: Integration is not happening’ (TMID, 11 August 2011). The report refers to the Employment and Training Corporation’s role in the integration on immigrants in Malta.

I would like to point out that, in the first six months of this year, the Corporation has trained 90 immigrants in different subjects at its training complex.  The persons trained include refugees, persons having subsidiary protection and temporary humanitarian protection, as well as asylum seekers.

Every year, the Employment and Training Corporation processes hundreds of applications for employment licences (work permits) applied for by immigrants or their employers. At present there are 1,785 immigrants who have an active employment licence (50 refugees, 973 persons having subsidiary protection, 505 persons having temporary humanitarian protection, and 257 asylum seekers and failed asylum seekers).

The Corporation strongly believes that training and education are the keys to the integration of immigrants. Training and education increase the chances of employability of these individuals.  The Corporation remains committed to providing free training and education to these people with the aim of integrating them into the labour market and society as quickly as possible.
