Too Narrow

Malta Independent Friday, 9 September 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

On the way to Sliema or St Julian’s, the Birkirkara Road-Mrabat carriageway was always a problematic juncture to navigate, because of the parked vehicles at the narrow parts of the street, the dangerous angle of the pavements, double parking, and the narrow junction connecting these two streets. On the way from Sliema to San Ġwann the same problems are encountered and at times the queuing back tail at the petrol station renders the passageway to single lane traffic.

Anyway, back to the tarmac stretch which in a couple of weeks might be impossible to navigate, Birkirkara Road to Mrabat Street. I suggest that part of these roads at and around this juncture will be made one-way only:

Traffic from Birkirkara Road to proceed downhill (one-way) past the Mrabat Street entry point and turn first right uphill (one-way) to Mrabat Street. The same street will be utilised for the traffic between Old College Street towards Sliema or San Ġwann. Maybe a Give Way sign at this point will assist towards an efficient traffic flow.

Traffic from Mrabat Street towards Birkirkara Road will proceed through the one-way junction joining these roads.

Traffic from Savoy Hill to St Julian’s will proceed through Rudolph Street and down Manuel Dimech Street (mind the bridge).

The parking along the narrowest part of these roads will be prohibited, at least, during peak traffic. Maybe the Local council could provide other parking space to clear the obstruction.

Hence Birkirkara Road and Mrabat Street will be two way except at these junctions. After all it is obvious that these narrow stretches do not accommodate for a safe and efficient traffic flow.

If the traffic corridors are to remain the same the crush barrier at the beginning of Mrabat Street need repositioning while a traffic mirror on the opposite wall will be helpful to those vehicles entering Birkirkara Road to San Gwann.
