Appreciation: Paul Cutajar – Vice President of Malta Kennel Club

Malta Independent Sunday, 11 September 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

In the late 80s, a friend who also happened to be his next-door neighbour introduced Paul to the Malta Kennel Club. I had joined the club some years earlier when the same person had introduced me to this club.

Paul started his ‘showing’ career with an Irish Red Setter. He was the first person to import a Red and White Setter that went on to win “Best in Show”. Some years later, Paul was again the first person to import a Welsh corgi (Pembroke) and had been showing and breeding Welsh corgis ever since. Actually, dog enthusiasts referred to Paul is as “Pawlu tal-corgis”.

Some years ago we decided to stand for election on the committee of this same club and after being elected Paul was nominated vice president, a post he held till his demise. I held the post of Club Secretary at the same time and have worked with him for the past two decades. Paul was a dedicated family man and a loyal club person who enjoyed the respect of everyone in the local dog scene. He was a person you could rely on and he was always there when we needed him. He never complained and offered his help at all times. He even gave his contribution when he was confined to his home, bravely fighting the battle against his terminal illness. Paul was loved by all – members and committee. I got to know Paul when he joined the club and since then I have also got to know his wonderful family. I cannot find the right words to describe Paul. He was a pillar of the Malta Kennel Club and we have lost a friend, a colleague and a club stalwart. However, we will never forget Paul – he will always be in our thoughts and prayers.

I would like to take this opportunity to solicit a prayer for Anthony Belli who was also a member of the Malta Kennel Club. He was another dedicated dog enthusiast who passed away on 20 August following many months of resisting against his illness.
