The Valletta Subbuteo Club started off their European Campaign in the Welsh Grand Prix which was held in Cardiff.
The team made up of Derek Conti, Samuel Bartolo, Mario Camilleri, Jason Pisani, Christian Thomas and Chris Short started off in style on Saturday’s individual competition where Samuel Bartolo, ranked 27th, beat Christophe Dheur of Belguim, ranked 13th, with a combative 2-1 scoreline. After this success, the citizens, ranked 71st, played in the teams tournament yesterday where they were grouped with Atlas TFC of Greece, ranked 7th, and Kent Invicta of the UK, ranked 39th.
The group stage was dominated by the citizens winning 3-0 against Atlas and a 4-0 win on Kent. In the quarter final, Valletta faced another Uk team ranked 31st, Yorkshire Phoenix winning again 4-0 setting up a semi final clash with Italian 30th ranked ASCT SESSANA 1982. The citizens were once again triumphant taking them to the final against eighth ranked SC Stembert. Another great performance in the final gave Valletta a 3-0 win making them Champions of Wales.
The team returns to Malta with the cup in hand today at noon.
