Jean Sammut No:27, first driver on the left of the grid
Eight-year-old Jean Sammut Jean was in the news again the past few days as he won the ninth round of the Honda Cadet Ellough Park 2011 non-MSA Championship and, in the process, strengthened his second place in the Honda Cadet Championship.
Competing in a grid of 18 drivers (aged 7 – 13) on a dry and overcast day, Jean’s first heat did not go according to plan when he started in second but was pushed from behind on the first lap. This caused Jean to spin and drop to last place. Jean recovered brilliantly and overtook his way back to 7th place by the end of the 10 -lap heat.
Heats 2 and 3 saw Jean start in 12th and 9th position, finishing the two heats in 5th and 4th place respectively.
This gave Jean a 6th place starting grid slot for the 14 lap final race.
The Maltese boy was on fire for the final, climbing up to 4th place by the end of the first lap and then overtaking to 3rd place by mid-race.
Jean was closing the gap to the two leading drivers, when the leading duo tangled together. He quickly took the opportunity to take the lead and built a two second gap, which he held on till the end of the race!
It was another great result for this young racing driver who has been racing and winning in this sport since the age of 6.
Jean races with the Ambition Motorsport Team and is widely regarded as one of the up and coming racing drivers in the UK. His aim is to compete and win the British Super 1 Cadet Championship, which counts Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton as past winners.
