Champions Valletta are expected to maintain their perfect start to the season when they face newly promoted Mosta tomorrow.
The citizens are already sole leaders on maximum points after three matches, two ahead of joint second placed Hibernians and Sliema.
The latter two clubs will be in action this afternoon as they face Balzan and Marsaxlokk respectively. On current form, they should also emerge winners from these encounters. The other match on the programme is a clash between Qormi and Tarxien Rainbows tomorrow.
Valletta should have no real problems in dealing with Mosta who were just a few seconds from registering a first win the past weekend, but saw Balzan snatching a last gasp equaliser.
Coach Oliver Spiteri’s boys are playing with great enthusiasm but it is obvious that the team still lacks the experience needed for matches in the Premier League. However, they are expected to improve as the season moves on.
Hibernians should also be able to beat newcomers Balzan Youths with relative ease.
The Paolites are a vastly improved side over last season. This was confirmed the past weekend when they demolished Birkirkara in a one-sided match which Mark Miller’s boys dominated from start to finish.
The Youths are sitting pretty in mid-table on four points. After winning their protest against the result of the Hamrun match (which they had lost 1-3), they went on to score a late equaliser against Mosta to take a point.
Now they know that today’s match against Hibernians should prove to be tougher and this is probably their biggest test so far.
The second match this afternoon sees Sliema crossing swords with Marsaxlokk.
The Wanderers are brimming with confidence after a very good start to the season – two wins and a draw. Their latest win – against arch rivals Floriana – brought about a certain amount of enthusiasm in their ranks and it is obvious that they will be seeking to extend their positive run.
Of course, it will not be easy against Marsaxlokk, but the southern seasiders will have to be a better outfit than they were against the 10-man Mqabba side last week when, quite surprisingly, they lost 2-0.
It was a big setback for Marsaxlokk as they now strive to return to winning form as quickly as possible in the hope of moving up the standings.
The match between Qormi and Tarxien tomorrow should also be keenly contested between two balanced sides.
Last weekend, Qormi were no match for a superior Valletta (but then who is at present?) while Tarxien obtained their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw against Hamrun Spartans.
Both sides will be aiming to get the three points from this encounter, but I am convinced they will also be happy with a point apiece.
