Malta’s Elaine Genovese, right, has won the Citta di Vittoria tournament in Sicily the past weekend.

In the final, Genovese, a member of the Leonardo Tennis Academy of Catania, beat Taormina girl Miriana Tona 6-4 6-2.

According to Sicilia Tennis.it, Genovese played brilliantly and proved to be stronger than her opponent.

In the semifinal stage, Tona had defeated Simona Porchia of Syracuse 6-3 7-6, while Genovese beat Veronia Napolitano of Catania 6-1 7-6.

So impressed were the organizers of the tournament, Virtus Tennis Vittoria, with the performance of Genovese in this tournament, that the club president, Salvatore Pluchino, made an official statement during the presentation, saying that the strong Maltese girl had signed for the women’s team of the club. Her team-mates will include the experienced Raffaella Coffa. The others are Vincenza Ciraolo and Anastasia Fondacaro, whom she already knows quite well from the Leonardo Tennis Academy. With this team the club hopes to win the second division title.

The team is to be coached by Renato Marabito from Catania.
