Cricket: Marsa CC Square series against Effigies CC

Over the weekend the Marsa C.C took on new touring team Effigies C.C who are from the United Kingdom.

On Saturday the Effigies batted first in the 40 over match. Rob and Tom Mitchell opened the batting. Rob was first to go being bowled by a brilliant delivery from Nowell Khosla for two runs.

Richard Kimber was next and put on a 26 run partnership with Tom before Tom was caught for 12 runs. Pari Vandra was next in and next out scoring three runs being stumped swiftly by Johnnie Grima. Kimber’s innings came to a halt being bowled by an absolute gem of a delivery from Dave Borg who ended with two wickets in the day.

Mitch Lawlor played a patient innings of 12 runs. A couple of quick wickets fell and the tourists were in trouble. In came Jamie Eaton and John Vaughan who put some respectability in the score sheet.

Eaton top scored with 23 runs and Vaughan 16 runs. The scoreboard was aided with 23 extras. Effigies totalled 121 runs from their allotted overs. For the Marsa team Sarfraz Ali was the main wicket taker with three. Ronnie Sacco took two wickets while Mark G Sacco took one.

In reply the Marsa batsmen were on fire and made their target in the 27th over. The charge was led by Ronnie Sacco who top scored with 45 runs which included five fours. Javed Shah scored 19 runs, Robert Krishna 17 and Nowell Khosla 16 as the main contributors. For the visitors John Vaughan was the main wicket taker with two while Henry Mitchell, Mike Eagle and Jamie Eaton all took a wicket each. One nil to the Marsa team.

On Sunday The Effigies batted first again and compared to their previous days effort they improved immensely scoring 146 runs from the20 overs which they had. Henry Mitchell made 30 runs, Tom Mitchell 35 runs. Both batsmen hitting two fours and a six.

Mike Eagle scored 26 runs and Rob Mitchell 17. For the Marsa team who had two debutants from the academy, Daniel Galea and Adam Caruana , playing their first game against a touring side, Tony Slater was the main wicket taker, while Adam Caruana, Gordon Hewit and John rusher (with his first ball he bowled) all took a wicket each.

In reply the Marsa team could only muster up 67 runs with Malcolm Crabbe scoring 35 runs. For the tourists Jonathan Stocker, Richard Kimber and John Vaughan all took two wickets while Mike Eagle and Jamie Eaton took a wicket each. Effigies squared the series.

Next weekend the Marsa team play against Quick C.C from Holland tomorrow and Elmdon C.C on Sunday.

Tomorrow the cricket academy/nursery will be from 9am till 10.30am
