Jonathan Balzan and Carmen Hili were the winners of the men’s and women’s categories in the Mdina Glass 10k races held recently.
The Ladies’ 21st edition was gladly received amongst the running community. The event is welcomed not merely for the route, since it is generally flat but also due to the atmosphere generated. It has now become a favourite amongst runners. 106 runners braved the streets of Ta Qali, and whereabouts of Attard finishing at Mdina Glass. This time round there was also a 6.5k walk. Mdina Glass generously supported the race for the 18th time, as always presenting the most creative trophies.
Most runners apply for this race and eye it as their start to the running season, to be able to be in athletic form for the MAAA league which starts this month. Some of the most talented runners, Jonathan Balzan, Jason Martin and Brian Magri, Carmen Hili and Angela Sammut, took part. All were challenged to their utmost abilities.
The trio composed of Brian Magri, Jonathan Balzan and Jason Martin again proved to be worthy competitors. Jonathan Balzan ended the winners with a time of 33.05, Jason Martin followed with a time of 33. 27, whilst Brian Magri secured his third position with a time of 33.58.
In the Ladies’ race, Carmen Hili was the Queen and was in great form finishing in a time of 39.33.
Carmen was ecstatic both with her first win in the Mdina Glass 10k, but also most importantly with her time. She seemed fearless, fought with vigour and strength and she secured her feat.
Angela Sammut came in second with a time of 40.30. Even though she was disappointed, it was still a marked improvement from the previous year.
Francesca Arrigo was the first LRC member in for the sixth consecutive time, while Marthese Lia won the O/40 category and Cecilia Degaetano took the 0/70 category.
This year the Ladies running Club donated part of the proceeds of the race to Dar Merhba Bik.
