The National Fencing Association Malta will be participating at the Fencing Senior World Championships which will be hosted in Catania, Sicily between today and tomorrow week.
The NFAM will be fielding three male fencers who will take part in the Epee and Foil individual categories. Pierre Bianchi, Paul Vincent Borg and Andre Zahra are representing Malta at this world event. They have won several local honours between them over the previous and prior seasons. Bianchi, a winner of the double gold at the Malta Open in 2010 and Sabre National Champion, is a veteran of several Open International and Regional tournaments.
Borg and Zahra, National champions at Epee and Foil respectively, are looking forward to their first world event after having competed in Open tournaments overseas.
Zahra is the current holder of the double gold at the Malta Open 2011, which tournament is a stepping stone for the Regional tournaments.
This years world championship has attracted a larger than usual number of participants - over a thousand - who will be doing their utmost to reach the top of the world rankings to clinch a place in the London Olympics next year.
The growing popularity of the sport was also evident throughout the season at the major regional events.
The three athletes will be accompanied by Juan Formosa, NFAM president and Head of Delegation Alexander Micallef.
The NFAM acknowleges the assistance of the MOC who will be subsidising part of the travel and lodging costs related to this event.
