Football – UEFA U-21 Euro 2013 - Ray ‘Zazu’ Farrugia Sees red as Ukranians are frustrated

Malta Independent Sunday, 9 October 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

National Under 21 coach Ray ‘Zazu’ Farrugia will probably be suspended at least one match by UEFA after being sent off just before the end of the match against The Ukraine on Friday evening at the Gozo Stadium.

Farrugia expressed his delight after Rowen Muscat scored a last-gasp equaliser by going up the fence in celebration before the home fans.

He was reported to the referee by one of his assistants, probably the fourth official, and the Greek referee, S. Tritsonis, did not hesitate to show him the red card.

At the end, Farrugia said he might have exceeded limitations in celebrating the equaliser. “I could not hide my joy,” he said.

He praised his boys for the efforts and for obtaining such a prestigious result against one of the challengers in the Group.

But it was not just the Malta coach who received a report.

The UEFA delegate (observer) was also busy reporting an incident which few might have noticed at the time Malta scored the equaliser.

In fact, at the end of the match, when everything calmed down, it was noticed that the Ukrainian substitutes’ bench had been broken (in their frustration) and this was reported to the UEFA delegate who also included it in his report of the match.

It is quite possible that the Ukrainians will be ordered to pay for the damages apart from being fined by UEFA.

Malta’s next Under 21 match in this Group is another Gozo Stadium fixture against Lithuania next Tuesday (kick-off 3pm).
