The football selection of the Malta Employees Sports Association recently visited Ayia Napa in Cyprus, where they registered a positive result beating a selection from the local team of Ayia Napa, composed of young and veteran players who lost their place in the first team which plays in the second division of Cyprus.
The Malta team won 4-2 in an interesting match. After no goals were registered in the first half, where the Maltese hit the post twice, the Cyprus team went in front. But a strong reaction by the Malta team resulted in scoring three times through Martyn Curtis, Dino Trakosopoulos and Alan Galea. Ayia Napa scored again, but the Maltese selection under the expert guidance of player coach Oliver Mallia, made sure of victory with another goal scored by Alan Galea.
At the end of the match the Mayor of Ayia Napa presented a handsome trophy to the Malta captain Ivan Zammit. The Malta team played with the following formation: Roderick Bonnici, Mark Haber, Robert Adami, Christian Camilleri, Vaughan Barnes, Martyn Curtis, Alan Galea, Brian Mizzi, Dino Trakosopoulos Andre Xuereb, Ivan Zammit and player coach Oliver Mallia.
Later on, the the Mayor of Ayia Napa hosted the MESA delegation at his office and presented Mario Meli, as chairman and leader of the delegation, with a commemorative plaque.
On his part Meli gave the Mayor a souvenir of Malta and also presented gifts to the captain of the Ayia Napa team and to other guests present.
The Malta Employees Sports Association thanked the Mayor of Mellieha, Robert Cutajar, for his assistance and for the interesting programme prepared and also the Malta Council of Sport and the Parliamentary Secretary for their support.
