Volleyball: Tatara Bathrooms Rabat Team launched

Malta Independent Wednesday, 12 October 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Earlier this year, a volleyball-fascinated individual from Rabat Malta, decided to make his dream turn to reality by founding the Tatara Bathrooms Rabat Volleyball Team.

This person, Darren Giordmaina, has been involved in the local volleyball scene from 1989. From his own past experiences he knows well that sport plays a very important role in a person’s healthy life, both physically and psychologically. He hails from Rabat: so it is of no surprise that although he had past successes with other teams, he wants to get that same success with his hometown team. So he set the ball rolling for the all-female team.

He first formed a committee consisting of just four persons - Phyllis Micallef, Kelly Gauci, Brigitte Cauchi and himself. Together they secured a sponsorship from Tatara Bathrooms and Punch & Judy Club which are both situated in Rabat.

The team had already attracted the attention of some female players who wanted a new challenge. Darren, as a coach, wanted some extra help with regards to the on-the-field issues. So he appointed Alexandra Meier as an assistant coach and Phyllis Micallef and Alexia Vella Deguara as captains. Joining this well-united team, Malcolm Bartolo has been appointed as fitness coach.

And their commitment is already showing up. The squad organised a fund-raising activity which gave the team the financial support that they constantly need.

Presently there are 19 female players who form part of this squad. The squad trains two times a week at two different venues. The team will participate in the second divison league organised by the Malta Volleyball Association.

Everyone in this squad knows that they must work hard and be determined to achieve the much-desired success. The players know that they need to be at their best in every game and they know that they have the 100% support from the committee members and coaching staff. They are all focused on their prime target - to be league champions come March 2012.
