Malta Independent Sunday, 16 October 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Michael Mifsud, Maltese national team captain, is the first ever Maltese player to vote for the FIFPro FIFA World XI. He was also one of the first Maltese footballers to join the Malta Football Players Association.

FIFA and FIFPro have joined forces to honour the best 11 players of the year with the FIFA FIFPro World XI award. FIFA FIFPro World XI is chosen by over 50,000 professional football players from all over the world, who vote for the best player in each position.

Thanks to MFPA, Maltese players have the opportunity to vote for the FIFA FIFPro World XI.

Michael Mifsud is probably the best football talent Malta has ever produced, and also he is the all time national team top scorer with 30 goals from 88 matches. Michael scored a magnificent goal in the recent EURO 2012 qualifier, Malta-Georgia which ended in a 1-1 draw.

Mifsud said: “I am honoured to join thousands of other professional players around the world to vote for the FIFA FIFPro World XI and to be the first Maltese player to do so.” Malta is one of the smallest countries but it has a great football tradition as the Malta Football Association was founded in 1900.

The Malta skipper is now playing his football in Malta with Valletta FC after playing for several years in various European leagues with teams such as Kaiserslautern, Lillestrom, Coventry City and Barnsley.

Michael is a keen supporter of the Malta Football Players Association (MFPA). He said: “The Players Association in Malta is still in the early stages, but when I was approached I joined the MFPA without hesitation and I support the initiative. Also I promised to help the MFPA and encourage other players to join.”
