Next Sunday ASM will be organizing the second Autocross national championship at Ta’ Qali and the Motocross section will be competing in Sicily. Sunday’s programme at Ta’ Qali is between 2pm and 5.30pm.

The first Autocross Class ‘A’ Championship was won by Patrick Cassar on an Opel 1400cc but due to a penalty he shares the same points as Christian Galea on a Fiat Ritmo who is placed second overall. Manuel Muscat on another Opel car and Ryan Scerri on a Fiesta finished in 3rd and 4th place respectively.

In class ‘B’ Karmelo Zammit on an Escort Mk 3 won this nine-lap race with a marginal gap over the other five cars in his competition. Second place was very well battled between Philip Vella and Keith Borg, both on Opel Nova cars.

This weekend, the ASM Motocross Team Malta will be leaving to the Giarrizzo Corse MX in Favara in Agrigento to compete in the FMI Sicilia national motocross championship.

Clayton Camilleri will be riding on a KTM, Stefan Dimech will be riding a Honda and Gozitan Josef Attard will be riding another Honda. All three competitors will be competing in the ‘MX2-250cc over 21’ Class where the competition is strong and the class population is large.

The ASM MX Team will again be accompanied by ASM president Frans Deguara and a small team of technicians and supporters. They will meet officials from the Italian Federation FMI as well as officials from the UEM-FIM to discuss the possibility of future Motocross events in Malta.

The ASM riders will be racing in Giarrizzo next from 9am in a qualifying race and two heats each lasting about 20 minutes. The ASM Motocross team is expected back in Malta next Monday and Virtu Ferries is supporting these events.

This race in Giarrizzo is the second event away from our shores. ASM members have already participated in a Moto-Beachcross in Calabria and can participate in all national and European championships since its membership in the European Federation for Motorcycling UEM-FIM.

For the second time in two years ASM members will again benefit from a three-day expert tuition in Motocross and Trials bikes riding for competitions by a team of technicians from the UEM and FMI. They are expected to arrive in Malta in about three weeks’ time. ASM wants its youths to reach high standards in Motocross and Trials bikes sport to be able challenge for high places in European events.
