Football: Bank Of Valletta second division: Gzira and Gudja remain on top, but Gharghur and Kirkop also register good wins

Gudja kept hold of their winning streak when they triumphed over San Gwann with the score of 3-1, in their fifth consecutive win. They secured their place at the top of the grid with 13 points, tied with Gzira.

Gudja’s William Camenzuli opened the scoring in the 39th minute, when his powerful shot from outside the area was deflected by San Gwann’s defenders, and finiahed at the back of the net.

Seven minutes into the second half, Keith Vella equalised for San Gwann with a header on a freekick by Bregman.

Gudja took the lead again in the 73rd minute thanks to Trevor Thomas’s long-distance drive. In the first minute of injury time, goalkeeper Carbonaro appeared to catch Agius’ foot in the area, with the referee awarding a penalty. From the spot, William Camenzuli scored his second goal and sealed Gudja’s three points.

This was San Gwann’s second consecutive defeat, where after five games they are still with just one win, with a total of five points.

Gzira maintained their positive winning streak this season when they triumphed over Mellieha 4-0, in a game completely dominated by the winning side.

This was the second defeat for Mellieha this season, who are now on their way down in the table.

Gzira on the other hand secured their first place on the grid, where after five outings, they are still unbeaten.

Gzira opened the scoring after just five minutes of play, when from a cross by Ewurun, Ryan Deguara’s header beat goalkeeper Agius. Mellieha tried to react and were close to equalising in the 12th minute, when Loquete’s freekick went slightly high over the crossbar.

Ten minutes into the second half, Gzira doubled their lead thanks to Simon Shead, who after a good run through the opponents’ defence, concluded at the back of the net with a low shot.

Six minutes later, Gzira increased their lead, when Ryan Buttigieg dispossessed Simiana in the middle of the pitch, went past Mellieha’s custodian, and concluded between the empty posts.

Gzira sealed the match in the 70th minute, when Anthony Ewurum surprised Abela with a chip from outside the penalty area.

Zebbug 1

Gharghur 4

Gharghur registered their second consecutive win this season when they defeated Zebbug with the score of 1-4, in a match entirely dominated by Gharghur, in which both teams were reduced to 10 men.

Gharghur have now gone up to the second place on the grid with 10 points, whilst Zebbug, who after five outings are still to register their first win, now find themselves in the lower end of the table with one point.

Gharghur opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, when John Nwoba’s header on Stivala’s freekick beat Zarb. Nine minutes later, Gharghur increased their lead thanks to Edmond Lapira, who after recieving from Vella, concluded at the back of the net with a first-time effort.

Five minutes into the second half, Gharghur were reduced to ten men, when Luke Stivala was sent off for handling in the area. From the spot, Chris Ciappara pulled one back for Zebbug.

Thirty minutes before stoppage time, Zebbug’s Nathan Caruana was sent off for a dangerous foul on Ryan Debattista.

In the last 10 minutes of the match, Gharghur scored twice and sealed off the match. In the 84th minute, Ruben Gravata beat Zarb with a powerful long-distance drive, and six minutes later, John Nwoba made them four for his team, after a good run through Zebbug’s defence.

Luqa St Andrews 2

Zurrieq 1

Luqa St Andrews achieved their second win this season against Zurrieq, the latter having suffered four losses and one win so far. The Saints fought for a win and the result was an unfortunate one for Zurrieq who played well throughout the whole match.

During the first 45 minutes, both teams had several opportunities and both goalkeepers showed excellent abilities as they saved every attempt.

Luqa opened the score on the 67th minute when Randolph Penza shot past Zurrieq’s goalkeeper Roderick Vella from close range.

Zurrieq equalised on the 75th minute following an action within the penalty area, where Johan Briffa passed to Dino Bonnici, turned over to Alistair Camilleri who fired a nice central shot.

Three minutes later, Luqa obtained their second goal when Randolph Penza’s header was partially saved by Vella and from the rebound, Lee Baldacchino scored an angled shot.

The match ended with a score of 2-1 in favour of the Saints who are now placed sixth in the standings.

Kirkop U 2

Rumen Kerekov’s stylish double gave Kirkop United a winning return in this season’s fifth match against Attard placing them only three points behind Gzira and Gudja United, currently leading the table.

In the first half, Attard had several opportunities at scoring; however none were successful.

On the 12th minute, Kurt Zahra’s rising free kick from a notable distance saw Kirkop’s goalkeeper punching over the bar.

Five minutes before break, Kirkop took the lead when Ivan Stancovic, from within the penalty area, passed to Orianski Buhagiar, back to Rumen Kerekov who scored with a central shot.

During the second half Attard were more determined to score.

On the 82nd minute, Attard’s chances at achieving a point ended when United’s Rumen Kerekov successfully shot past Attard’s goalkeeper.

Senglea 1

St Venera 2

St Venera won their second match of the season after they managed to beat Senglea Athletic 2-1. It was a match full of chances with both teams creating scoring opportunities.

The first action came from Senglea on the third minute when from a corner by Jonathan Buttigieg, Stacey Vella’s shot went over the bar.

On the 7th minute St Venera had their first chance but Glenn Micallef’s central shot went wide.

The Saints took the lead on the 15th minute. It was a good combination from Wingfield, Carbonaro and Mercieca with Mercieca ending the action with a low shot that went past Attard.

Four minutes later St Venera doubled. It was again Dylan Mercieca who scored after he stole the ball from Michael Ciappara and with a strong shot, doubled the score.

On the 23rd minute Senglea were awarded a penalty. It was a dubious decision taken from the referee after Mark Muscat floored Emeka in the box. The penalty was taken by Emeka but Cuschieri had other plans as he managed to save the shot.

On the 34th Cuschieri made a good save after a free-kick from Buttigieg. Senglea managed to reduce the score on the 43rd minute when Glenn Brincat’s shot was deflected.

Senglea went close on the hour when a free-kick from Brincat was deflected to a corner and Micallef’s shot went out. Senglea were piling the pressure and had two chances from Emeka but the latter’s shots went wide.

On the 77th minute St Venera had a good chance but Andrew Hili shot the ball wide. On the 85th minute George Attard saved a shot from Mark Grech after a good personal action.
