With reference to Charles Flores’s article entitled “You can only hate it” (TMIS, 23 October), I absolutely disagree with his statement: “It is safe to proclaim there is not a single journalist or broadcaster anywhere on these islands who can claim to be apolitical, let alone independent. Fair yes, realistic certainly, but in a minuscule society that thrives on politics with both a small p and a big p, there is no escaping the ‘original sin’ we tend to be born with, and that, I hasten to add, has absolutely nothing to do with religion, catechism or a pocketful of indulgences to be gained.”

I have been in broadcasting for 43 years, and have never ever been biased politically, though I do, occasionally, comment on local politics, albeit during musical shows! I was quite amazed to read Mr Flores’s comments, especially since I worked under his management at PBS for several years!

Actually, he was my best ever manager!

I do claim to be apolitical, yes... in fact, I even criticised the party that owned the radio station I worked with several times between 2000 and 2003!

May I also add that over the years I have worked for both stations owned by the leading political parties and never had any problems when I expressed my views… even when such views opposed the station’s − and relative party’s – beliefs!
