Malta Hopes to win again today this time against Lithuania

Malta Independent Saturday, 5 November 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 15 years ago

Malta coach Damien Neill and his band of rugby warriors are eager to register a second consecutive victory this afternoon when facing Lithuania at the Hibernians Stadium (2pm) The atmosphere in the squad cannot be better at present after last Saturday’s impressive 28-0 drubbing of Latvia on their own soil. However, half of the players were still being treated for injuries yesterday though all were expected to be declared fit for today’s encounter.

Neill is hoping his players will carry last Saturday’s great form into today’s clash to be able to pull of another great result.

He is aware it is not going to be easy. Lithuania, in fact, are seven places above Malta in the IRB ranking list, but enthusiasm reigns high among the Maltese clan after last Saturday’s very impressive win.

Neill believes that with the crowd behind the local boys, they will be able to rise once again to the occasion, providing an entertaining and highly satisfactory afternoon for all.

The Malta coach, however, is keeping his feet to the ground. He is also aware of Lithuania’s potential. Earlier this week, he said: “We are well aware that Lithuania hold the world record unbeaten run and rank 39th in the IRB rankings. Furthermore, several of their players are professionals in the Russian league and the majority are army athletes, so we have to be at our very best.” A victory for Malta today will almost certainly ensure Malta remains in this division.
