The National Book Prize 2011 marked its 40th Maltese Book Awards anniversary with a celebration on Thursday at the Auberge de Castille, when prizes in honour of the Maltese Book were awarded. Midsea Books Ltd landed five prestigious prizes in a range of categories, establishing it as this year’s leader-publisher. The prize-winning books are:

In the Non-Fiction Prose classification: The late Annabelle Vassallo’s Irrid Ngħix, a publication that touched the hearts of many Maltese and Gozitans.

The Biographical and Historical Research in Maltese or in Another Language Category was capped by the book Francesco Zahra 1710-1773 by Dr Keith Sciberras, celebrating the anniversary of 300 years since the birth of Francesco Zahra and presenting most of his widely spread extraordinary artistic productions.

In the General Research in Maltese or Another Language Category, Midsea Books Ltd led with two books – the first winner in this category is the book A Complete Guide to the Birds of Malta by Natalino Fenech, which is an extensive manual depicting all that is related to birds in Malta. Second place went to Matty Cremona, author of the book, The Way we Ate, a work that unveils typical Maltese food, its origins and its memories.

Crowning the Special Awards Category, primed Fondazzjoni Patrimonju Malti’s book Edward Caruana Dingli, which earned the award for Best Production of Other Language book. This book narrates the life of the famous painter of the 20th century.
