In Malta, Air-Pistol shooting is making great strides in quality as well as in its popularity. This is reflected by the recent increase in shooters practsing this Olympic sport at the Malta Air-Rifle and Pistol Shooting Club at the Larry Vella Indoor Airgun Shooting Range in Bidnija. It is also becoming a very popular sport with female shooters.
Last Saturday, Ray Cacciattolo was in top form, shooting one of his best scores of his career 549/600 to win comfortably the third Airgun Shooting competition of this season at Bidnija.
Although he had some good opposition from Stephen Vassallo who also scored a personal best score of 539/600, there was no beating Cacciattolo who shot an excellent score in the final to win the event in style.
Martin Grech followed in third place with a score of 498 points.
The ladies air-pistol event was won by Eleanor Bezzina scoring 371/400 points ahead of Josette Calleja who obtained 332/400 points.
In the ‘mixed’ Air-Rifle event, Gozitan shooter Romeo Zuber placed first with a score of 502/600 ahead of newcomer Alison Vella. She performed quite well notwithstanding that this was her first competition and even managed to get a better score than Zuber in the final, which however, was not enough for her to take the lead.
She seems sure to become a force to be reckoned with in the near future as she progresses further.
The competitions were judged by Gino Galea, assisted by Lawrence Darmanin.
