Veteran Zurrieq Wolves runner Alfred Debono consolidated his position as undisputed top long distance runner in the Over-60 category in the IAAF accredited long distance races.
Debono, above, placed first (out of total 148 athletes) in his category and achieved an overall 361st position out of over 13,000 participants in the National Lottery Dublin Marathon that it was held recently.
Coached by a Russian, Ivan Roshnov, this was his 21st full marathon in a running career spanning 17 years. Alfred notched his sixth pole position in his category out of the eight marathons he has completed in since turning 60, three years ago. These complement his 100% record (in his category) in the four half marathon races he has competed in over the same period.
Unfazed by the adverse weather conditions, Alfred continued to defy his advancing years by clocking in 3hr 04m 33s. This was his best timing in 18 months on the marathon course, and an improvement of 2m 33s on his previous marathon in Stockholm (May 2011).
Medcomms ltd, local agents for Garmin, and Gasan Mamo Insurance have once again assisted Debono in his race in Dublin.
