The Malta Amateur Athletics Association has announced the athletes that have been chosen as the Athletes of the Year for the past season.
These are Kevin Moore as the foremost male and Diane Borg as the best female.
Both these athletes were prominent at the Games for the Small States of Europe in Liechtenstein this summer, instrumental in winning for Malta a number of medals that produced the best result away from our shores at these Games so far.
Kevin won a gold medal in the 400m sprint in a national record time of 47.68 seconds and a silver medal as anchor to the 4 x 400m relay team which also established a national record of 3:15.73minutes.
Diane Borg came back from a long term injury to win two gold medals and a silver medal, to establish three new national records in the process.
In her 200m victory she stopped the clock on 24.27seconds. Earlier in the week, for her closest of defeats in the 100m sprint, her record time was 11.89 seconds. Finally, as part of the 4 x 100m relay team, she helped contribute to a winning time of 46.30 seconds. A memorable achievement indeed.
Diane went on to represent Malta at the European team championships Third Division in Reykjavík, Iceland, and at the World Athletics Championships in Daegu, South Korea, where she was successful to make her way through the preliminaries and into the competition proper.
The Malta Amateur Athletics Association has also deemed appropriate to honour the two Junior athletes found to be the most deserving during the year 2011.
Christian Luke Chetcuti, a middle and long distance promising young athlete, distinguished himself representing Malta at the European team championships Third Division in Reykjavík, Iceland and at the FISEC Games in Lisbon Portugal.
Nicole Gatt, the junior female athlete of the year, continued to add to her string of successes, topmost this year being at the Games for the Small States of Europe when she became the youngest competitor to win a medal – a bronze for placing third in the 400m, in a time of 57.07seconds.
She also represented Malta at the FISEC Games in Lisbon where she finished second in the 300m, winning a silver medal, and at the European Kids Athletics Games in Brno, the Czech Republic, where she won two gold medals. One success was a first in the 300m and another as part of the victorious 4 x 60m relay team.
