The opening stage of the MRFU Youth 7’s Series, sponsored by Gasan Mamo Insurance was held on 30 October.
Over 100 youth rugby players took part in the event at Marsa, across 4 age grades; U11, U14, U16 and U18. Teams were entered by Valletta Lions (U11), Falcons (U14 and U16), Birkikara Alligators (U11, U14 and U18), Kavallieri (U11, U14, U16 and U18) and Gharghur Gladiators (U18). 13 matches were played over three hours, with all teams playing in at least two games.
All matches were keenly contested as this was the first competitive rugby of the season for these players. The series will continue to run throughout the season, with a finals day due later in the year.
The age grade league fixtures started recently and included U-11 festival, alongside league fixtures for the U-14, U-16 and U-18 age grades.
The morning was reserved as an open day for youth rugby, with the day being promoted within the schools, with the aim of attracting more youth rugby players across all age grades in all the clubs.
Earlier this month, 35 U-11 players took part in an exhibition match during half time at the Malta-Lithuania international fixture. These youngsters were also able to line up with their heroes for the anthems before the game.
Last week the second foundation level coaching course was held. There will also be a follow up introduction to the level 1 course due to be delivered on 4 December.
In addition is the open day at Sliema Wanderers FC, home of the Sliema Stompers rugby club. This will take place next Sunday between 9am and 1pm.
The day will include the school of rugby session for all youth players from 9–11am; a girl’s rugby open day combined with the national ladies squad between 10am and 12.00 and finally a push by the Sliema Stompers in the local area to attract youth players to their club.
