Pieta consolidated their top spot beating Vittoriosa Stars 3-1 in an entertaining match. Pieta confirmed their worth yesterday against a Vittoriosa Stars who are now 11 points adrift of the leaders.

Pieta were worthy winners as they were the better team, with players like Vinicius Pereira Dos Santos a span above the rest.

Pieta had a brilliant start and forged ahead after only four minutes they took the lead with a penalty scored by Quilin Refalo. The penalty was awarded for a foul on Giaccaglia after a well taken freekick by Pereira Dos Santos.

Pieta continued to dominate the early stages with their speed and flair and they doubled the score on fourteen minutes thanks to well taken freekick by Pereira Dos Santos which gave Vella no chance to save.

The Blues continued to push forward and Pereira Dos Santos went close again with a shot from an acute angle. However slowly but surely Vittoriosa started to get more in the picture.

An Isaac Henry shot on the turn slightly missed the crossbar, and on 36 minutes Vittoriosa had a golden opportunity when Marcelo Pereira was floored by Cleaven Cassar, but from the resultant penalty Tassio Lopes Fereira’s shot was well saved by Montfort.

But two minutes later Vittoriosa were back in business when Marcelo Pereira again tested Montfort and from the rebound Isaac Henry made no mistake. Vittoriosa pushed forward for the equalizer but were punished in stoppage time when Pieta scored a third when Vella partially saved Zach Muscat’s header and Giaccaglia tapped the ball home.

On the resumption Pieta’s Zarate headed slightly wide and on the other end Marcelo Pereira tested Montfort. On 70 minutes Vittoriosa were unlucky when Isaac Henry hit the base of the upright with a shot on the turn from the edge of the area.

Vittoriosa tried to keep on pushing to get back in the match but Pieta defended well to keep their opponents at bay and grab three precious points to keep them firmly at the top.
