Stage 1 of the Nestle Fitness Malta International Challenge Marathon was held yesterday, starting from Mdina to Rabat on a distance of 11.195 kilometres. Jonathan Balzan was the first male athlete to finish the race clocking 38 minutes 22 seconds. Another Maltese runner, Johann Galea (39:19) was second and Englishman David Mansbridge was third (39:27).
Carmen Hili (45:36) was the first women to cross the finish line, 18th overall, followed by Marisa Muscat (47:35) placing 31st overall. Third best time for Malta’s Ladies came from Ramona Engerer (50:40) who finished 46th overall.
Stage 2 will be held today, starting at St George’s Bay, Birzebuga with a six-kilometre race. A 25-kilometre race will be held tomorrow, in the final stage.
