Dingli S 0
St. George’s 2
St George’s registered their second victory of the season beating Dingli Swallows with a Chukwunyelu second half brace. This deserved win lifts St George’s in the table as they are now equal on points with rivals and Cottonera neighbours Vittoriosa.
Dingli were better in the first half but failed to capitalise on some chances that came their way.
In the second part of the match St George’s were a completely different outfit and fully deserved their victory, even hitting the post through Chukwunyelu.
The Swallows did the early running with the Saints unable to go out of their defensive shell. On 20 minutes Dingli went close with a well taken freekick by Leontiev Konda.
Two minutes later Konda had a very good opportunity when he was put through by Mauro Brincat, but the former’s shot was blocked by the Saints’ goalkeeper.
St. George’s had their best chance on 25 minutes when Chukwunyelu powered his way inside the penalty area but his shot was well saved by Mark Abela.
Dingli created two other chances in the final minutes of the first half with Etienne Farrugia testing Marmara from an angle after receiving from Mauro Brincat, and Steve Meilak hesitated in front of goal, ruining some good work by Konda.
On 52 minutes the Saints came very close to take the lead when Jonathan Ruiz was put through by Dylan Zarb, his shot was somehow saved by Abela and from the rebound Chukwunyelu could only hit the base of the upright with an open goal at his mercy.
Chukwunyelu made amends five minutes later when he was put through by a Christian Grech header and scored a beauty from an impossible angle.
Dingli failed to make a strong reaction, but they were only dangerous on 77 minutes when they could have easily snatched the equaliser.
Meilak passed towards Ceka who crossed to the unmarked Etienne Farrugia whose shot beat Marmara, but captain Emanuel Sevasta was on hand to clear the ball off the goal line.
Two minutes later St George’s sealed the issue with a second goal when Eric Chukwunyelu received a long ball from defence and lobbed beautifully over the onrushing goalkeeper.
