Motivating people to get involved and do things for charity has become a hallmark of President George Abela’s tenure.

This year, about 11,000 people took part in the run, which is in aid of l-iStrina. Again, the number of people who took part broke records. As has become the norm, people split into two groups, those who did the run from Attard to Valletta and those who took it at a more leisurely pace. Families, couples, individuals, workmates and friends all banded together and got behind the President as thousands of people fell in for the leisurely jog though the streets and main thoroughfares. As usual, people lined the streets and offered encouragement to those who found it easy, and those who did not find it that easy at all.

The sense of camaraderie was again abundant, with people offering limitless encouragement to each other. Some were trained athletes, while others were, shall we say, a bit rusty. The sense of achievement, though, all round, could be felt. The best thing about the President’s Fun Run is that it motivates people to get off their bums and actually do something. Not only are such activities good for the body, mind and soul, but it actually makes a difference to people’s lives.

Many expressed reservations when the President decided to alter the format of l-iStrina by eliminating the prize draws. Many thought the donations would dry up. But luckily, the President’s faith in the Maltese people was well placed. Rather than see a drop in donations, people donated more and they actually got involved.

This is an aspect of philanthropy that people sometimes miss. Sometimes it is not just about giving, but actually taking part, giving up some free time to work with others for a common cause. This is what it is all about. Of course, like with everything else, it does eventually boil down to hard cash being raised for others in need.

But President Abela has taught us a worthwhile lesson, when we actually band together and do something voluntarily, it gives us the feel good factor. There were no political activities yesterday and Malta was, as a result, serene and at peace. One understands that politics is important and is an exercise in democracy, but just once in a while, it is actually beneficial for the country not to be steeped and mired in rhetoric. Instead, the people of Malta and Gozo were out walking and running with each other and their President. Once again, we thank Dr Abela for another successful Fun Run. One wonders where the man finds the energy. We also pay tribute to all those who found the time to band together and do something worthwhile.
