Democratic Deficit

Malta Independent Thursday, 8 December 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 13 years ago

Żminijietna - Voice of the Left expressed solidarity and support to the Greek and Italian people, the unions, various left parties, social movements and students’ organisations who are frustrated that their respective countries are now being run by non elected technocrats.

The persons who were chosen to head the governments are former senior officials of the European financial institutions. We believe that they were simply put there to safeguard the interests of the financial sector and to ensure the imposition of austerity measures on the people.

The European Union, in its pre-document, “The European Financial Framework 2014-2020” has failed to give importance to what is happening in Italy and Greece. The Council of Europe, together with the European Parliament has also imposed measures, such as the Euro plus Pact, where the ultimate aim is to deregulate the labour market, and put to a halt the labour price index, and the collective bargaining across the EU.

Żminijietna is also concerned that the proposed austerity measures, which various European governments are imposing on the people against their will, as shown by the people themselves, can lead to social and democratic instability. Żminijietna appeals to the Maltese MEPs, to voice their protest for the right of the Greek and Italian people to hold elections. We also urge them to work towards a Social and Ecological Europe.
