Cricket – Winter League: Match Abandoned: teams awarded three points each

Malta Independent Friday, 9 December 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

The first round of the Cricket Winter league came to end when the much anticipated game between Krishna C.C and Melita Betfair C.C was played on Saturday but ended haphazardly as it had to be abandone due to a waterlogged ground.

Both teams had beaten the Marsa team in their encounters and both had nine points.

Melita Betfair batted first with Chris Naudi and Justin Farrin Thorne opening the batting. Naudi could not believe his eyes (and luck) when, facing the first ball of the game, he saw Ronnie Sacco drop his catch. Naudi went on to make 18 runs before being bowled. Farrin Thorne had been bowled earlier for one run.

Both were dismissed by Kevin Krishna. Frank Spiteri took off from where he left off last week and made another 32 runs smashing five fours along the way. The only difference was that this week he was bowled.

Dave Mansfield batted well and scored 10 runs while he first partnered Spiteri, then Eamond Dolan (no runs), Mike Grima (one run) and Andy Naudi (21 runs) before being run out.

Andy Naudi hit two boundaries in his innings. It was not a memorable innings for John Claffey playing in his first game: he was bowled on the first ball he faced..

Tim Wheeler and Thomas Rusher batted through the last over scoring one run and no runs respectively.

Aided with 15 extras the Betfair team totalled 99 runs from their allotted overs.

Nowell Khosla and Ronnie Sacco also took two wickets each while Daniel Galea took his first wicket in the Winter league series.

The Krishna reply started off well enough with Nowell Khosla on seven runs and John Grima on three runs after one point two overs when the heavens above opened up and had all players scattering for cover in the pavilion.

It rained hard for approximately 15 minutes which was enough to waterlog the ground forcing the game to be abandoned, even though the sun was shining after. The two teams were awarded three points each.

Next Saturday the second game of the 40-over series takes place.

The Sunoco Cricket academy/nursery will be from 9am till 10.30am.
