Horse-racing: Prestigious Finals dominate coming race meetings

Malta Independent Friday, 9 December 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Two varied race-meetings will be held at the Marsa racetrack on Sunday and Tuesday 13 December (Republic Day public holiday), both starting at 1.30pm.

Sunday’s main attraction is the Burmarrad Commercials Coronation Cup over the sprint 1,250m distance. Eight top thoroughbreds hailing from France, Ireland and USA will compete for a classic trophy in Maltese flat racing, which traces its origins to Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation nearly 60 years ago.

A top-quality Premier class trot race will also be held on Sunday. This includes various well-known names such as Malta’s prize-winning record holder In Vitro du Bourg, Sette Giugno Cup winner Think Yatzee and many others.

Tuesday’s programme will then feature the final of the President’s Cup for Premier class trotters on the longish 2,640m distance.

Nine Swedish and three French trotters with an impeccable reputation, a mix of popular trotters and promising newcomers will strive to carve their name on this prestigious Cup. This will also give the occasion for the horse-racing community to tangibly give support to the Community Chest Fund.

Apart from other trot races, Tuesday’s programme will also feature a “monte’” race, i.e. a trot race with jockeys driving horses on horseback rather than in a sulky. This will further increase variety in the racing held at the Marsa racetrack.

Two great meetings are in the offing, with bumper crowds being expected at the Marsa racetrack.
