The Maltese national team managed to win the first edition of the Arriva Malta Open Championships at the Naxxar Boys Secondary by winning four gold medals.

The Welsh team came second with three gold medals while the Great Britain team had to settle for third place with one gold.

The Maltese gold winners were Gary Giordimaina (53kg), David Zammit (66kg), Abraham Vassallo (84kg) and Robert Bonavia (96kg).

Funds available, the Malta Amateur Wrestling Federation intends to make this occasion an annual event. In the near future Maltese wrestlers might be travelling to Wales for an international encounter against the home team.
