Allow me to advise your readers why any government minister who gets free travel in a businessman’s jet should resign.

In a still-developing country – Brazil – Labour Minister Carols Lupi was accused of accepting a free plane ride in 2009 from a businessman who was the director of a non-governmental organisation that had won government contracts with the Labour Ministry. Following denials and subsequent video proof of this, Lupi was forced to resign by President Dilma Roussseff. But this is not the interesting part of the story. During President Rousseff’s current term, six of her ministers have left amid corruption allegations. And what has this done to the President’s approval ratings – they have risen to 70 per cent, a sure indication of support for a President who does not accept any hint of corruption in her ministers. Surely this is a lesson for fully-developed Malta. Let’s hope Lawrence Gonzi is listening.
