Football: Bank Of Valletta second division: Gzira consolidate top place but Gudja, Mellieha win again

Gzira continued with their impressive winning streak as they beat Gharghur 4-0 to consolidate their position on top of the table.

The game was dominated by Gzira especially after their second goal and the sending-off of Antignolo.

Gzira opened the score on their first action when on the 12th minute Simon Shead went in the box , Cilia managed to save partially with his legs but Jimmy Hussey put the Maroons in front with a good shot.

On the 28th minute a shot from John Nwoba finished over the bar.

On the 34th minute Gzira doubled their lead. It was a very good action from the Maroons when Yanis Tonna passed the ball between two defenders to Anthony Ewurum who put past Cilia with a first time shot.

After this goal Beppe Antignolo was sent off following an argument with a Gzira official who was also sent off by referee Alan Mario Sant.

A minute in the second half Gzira scored a third goal. It was Simon Shead who netted from close range.

Now Gzira had a comfortable lead and a minute later Yanis Tonna passed to Ewurum but his shot was deflected to corner. On the 52nd minute Gzira were again dangerous when a cross from Ewurum but his semi-over head kick was central and was saved with no problem by Cilia. Gzira scored the fourth goal on the 57th minute when Rudi Alinho made a one-two with his team-mate and fired a shot that gave Cilia no chance.

On the 66th minute a good action from Shead had a shot saved by Cilia. On the 72nd minute Gharghur hit the post from a free-kick by Nwoba. Nwoba had another shot three minutes later but it was saved by Gerada.

On the 84th minute Gharghur went close to score a consolation goal when Luke Stivala crossed the ball and found Michael Borg Olivier but his first time shot went over the bar.

Gudja 4

Gudja scored an easy win over their opponents, beating St Venera, with promising youngster Peter Paul Sammut scoring a brace.

Gudja kept their second place on the grid with a total of 22 points tied with Mellieha.

On the other side of the fence, this was the third loss in a row for the Saints, who are still struggling in the bottom part of the table with nine points.

Gudja opened the scoring five minutes from the break thanks to a looping header by Masrko Milutinovic.

In the 61st minute, captain William Camenzuli increased his side’s lead thanks to a lovely header on a cross by Bilocca.

Peter Paul Sammut scored twice in the last 10 minutes to seal his side’s merited victory. T

he third goal came in the 78th minute with a low first-timer on a cross by Aguis, and the last goal was scored in the 89th minute, when Sammut fled the Saints’ defence and surprised the goalkeeper with a chip.

Luqa 0

After having lost their last three outings, Siggiewi returned to winning ways when they beat Luqa 1-0.

They now stand in the middle of the standings with a total of 12 points, tied with the same Luqa and Zurrieq.

Luqa had a good start and were the better side in the first half. They had two good occasions thanks to Baldacchino’s efforts in the 37th and 41st minute, but both were saved in style by goalkeeper Vella. 

Siggiewi took control of the match in the second half, and had a good opportunity to open the scoring in the 60th minute, when a good run by Camilleri ended with a cross towards Shead, but the latter’s shot skimmed the woodwork.

The only goal of the match came in the 76th minute, when Jason Camilleri disposessed Luqa’s defence and took goalkeeper Psaila by surprise. 

Five minutes from stoppage time, Camilleri was close to sealing his brace, when his shot from outside the area was saved from over the line by Luqa’s defender Abdilla.

Mellieha continued on their winning streak with a 3-0 defeat of Kirkop. Thanks to this fifth consecutive success, Mellieha remained in third place on the grid with 22 points, while Kirkop, who suffered their third loss in a row, continued dropping places - they are still on 13 points.

Mellieha had to wait till the 54th minute to open the scoring, when Tiago Loquete fled Kirkop’s defence and beat goalkeeper Caruana with a low shot.

Ten minutes before stoppage time, Keith Fenech took Caruana by surprise when he chipped the ball over the custodian and at the back of the net; and in the second minute of injury time, Matthew Vella sealed the victory for his side with a long-distance drive.

The clash between the two bottom sides saw Attard defeat Senglea 1-0.

Attard managed to take the three points home albeit being forced to play with 10 men for nearly 60 minutes. For the team from Cottonera, this was the ninth loss this season.They still lie at the bottom of the table with just three points.

Attard were down to 10 men in the 33rd minute, when Darren Galea was sent off by referee Utulu for dissent.

Two minutes before the break, Emeka’s cross found the unmarked Brincat, yet the latter’s first-timer was saved from above the line by Attard’s custodian.

The only goal of the match eventually came 20 minutes from stoppage time, when Dimcho Traykov’s direct freekick from the edge of the area took Senglea’s defence by surprise.

Zebbug registered their fifth consecutive win this season to keep their fourth place on the grid with a total of 18 points, when they triumphed over Msida with a solitary goal.

This was the seventh loss for Msida this season, where they have now dropped among the bottom six of the standings with nine points.

In the 22nd minute, Zebbug were close to opening the scoring, when subssitute Agius’ shot from outside the area went slightly high.

Eight minutes into the second half, Zebbug scored the only goal of the match, thanks to Sonyo Pereira da Mata’s header.

In the 66th minute, Msida were close to equalising, when Oswald Zammit’s first timer hit the crossbar.

San Gwann won their fourth seasonal match when they beat Zurrieq 2-0. San Gwann improved on the last match against Gharghur and fully deserved the three points.

Zurrieq went close to go in front when on the fifth minute a free-kick from Matthew Genuis hit the crossbar. San Gwann created their first opportunity when on the eighth minute a shot from Chris Cacciattolo.

On the 27th minute, a powerful shot from Miguel Francica was saved by Ellul. On the 45th minute Richard Attard missed a good chance from the small box when his header went out.

On the 51st minute San Gwann opened the score. It was a controversial decision when the assistant referee raised the offside flag but referee Glenn Tonna continued the game with Richard Attard scoring after a good action by Chris Cacciattolo.

Four minutes later Ellul made a good save off a free-kick from Cacciattolo.

San Gwann doubled their lead on the 62nd minute when James Borg headed home after a good corner. On the 78th minute a free-kick from Johan Briffa went over the bar and Ellul made a good save on substitute Asciak. On the 88th minute Ellul turned into a corner another free-kick from Cacciattolo.
