Chamber Of Commerce concerns justified!

Malta Independent Sunday, 18 December 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Anyone with a modicum of knowledge of how the European Union has evolved over time, knows that the present state has been reached one step at a time, with each step presented as a vital one which, if not taken, would bring about chaos and possible collapse of the whole EU project! The people of Europe were not to be told what the final aim behind each step was. Democracy was the last thing the EU elite had on their minds!

The latest so-called agreement by 26 member states – excluding Britain – is another step towards the final goal of a fully economically, fiscally and politically integrated federal European state. Or, as has always been described – The United States of Europe! The euro crisis has been jumped upon as the perfect excuse to move much closer to giving a final push towards that final destination!

Whenever the EU elite believed that any of the measures proposed might present insurmountable problems that could hinder the move forward towards full integration, such a proposal was dropped temporarily to reappear later on in the future. This is why the tax on financial transactions seems to have been put aside for now! Fiscal harmonisation has been on the Commission’s agenda for quite a number of years. What guarantees are there which will prevent such harmonisation from happening in the future? I can see none. The Commission has long aimed to acquire the right to raise taxes without the need to go through the usual parliamentary processes for contributions from member-states – the idea that the EU “ must have its own-resources” and not rely on just member states contributions!

This is why I can understand the reason that prompted the Chamber of Commerce to call for an urgent meeting of all interested parties and the government to discuss what the recent “agreement” entails. Sincerely, I do not believe that our prime minister and his minister of finance can give a clear picture of what is going to happen in the not too distant future. Most probably, they have no clue themselves!
