Premier side Qormi found the going hard against in-form Division Two leaders Gzira United yesterday, with the Yellows making it to the fourth round thanks to a Jorginho goal scored nine minutes from time.

Qormi were the better team and dictated matters for long stretches but could not penetrate Gzira’s stubborn defensive set up.

Scoring were scarce in the first half with early efforts from Pereira Da Silva and Nwoke blocked by the Gzira defenders.

On 13 minutes Qormi went close with a Pereira Da Silva close range effort slightly missing the target.

Minutes before the break Daniel Nwoke missed a glaring scoring chance when he failed to beat the Gzira custodian following a good cross from Pereira Da Silva.

Just before the break Gzira had their first and arguably their best chance of the whole match when Anthony Ewurun passed towards Hussey whose shot from the heart of the penalty area slammed against the crossbar.

At the start of the second period Gzita goalkeeper Agius saved his side with a splendid save off a Pereira Da Silva shot.

On the hour Daniel Nwoke’s shot missed the upright by inches, and Gzira hit back with a Shead long distance effort.

Qormi piled the pressure but could not find a way past the well organised Gzira defence with goalkeeper Agius in fine form.

Agius was again called in action to block a Duff Mc Laren freekick, but the Gzira custodian had to surrender nine minutes from time.

It was a well executed move between Mirarchi and Duff, and was finished off by Pereira Da Silva whose first timer gave Agius no chance to save.
