Overseas 17
Kavallieri 10
Despite having all the early territorial advantage a strangely unmotivated Kavallieri were outthought and outran by Overseas who won despite being reduced to 13 men by yellow cards in the final 10 minutes.
Thomas opened the score for Overseas with a good try against the run of play.Wright missed the conversion, but Kavallieri spent long periods in their opponents half.
A well placed penalty kick put them into the Overseas corner from where they launched a long series of attacking rucks and mauls. Finally Fiore whipped out a long pass to launch Jameson on a powerful, curving charge to score, carrying two tacklers with him.
Fiore missed the conversion.
Overseas won a scrum against the head but this was stifled by Kavallieri, to win the next one and launch a good attack, cleared by Wright’s kick.
In the face of sturdy tackling by Overseas the Kavallieri were kicking waay good possession from which Overseas launched counters.
Kavallieri split the defence through the middle but wasted the break with an awful pass to Debierre. Fiore attempted an impossible drop goal from half way and slowly the Overseas backs started to gain confidence, looking fast and dangerous when the managed to get possession.
The half ended at 5-5, with Kavallieri a little unclucky not to be further ahead.
In the second half Cassar for Overseas came into his element, breaking powerfully off the base of the scrum again and again and once the speedy backs started to receive ball on their toes the backline looked confident and dangerous.
A beautifully worked try started by Wright’s well timed distribution along the line, an extra man as the left wing James ran round and the right wing was on hand to cut inside Kawara to go over.
Another lovely Overseas try was created by rhythm and timing as the full back and wing combined from a Kavallieri drop out, and suddenly the lead was substantial at 17-5.
The game became a bit scrappy but every now and then Overseas combined with fast and sweeping attacks Kawara and Cumbo excelled in the Kavallieri defence, although the team did not look fully fit and there was little back up when Kawara made some breaks.
A beautiful Overseas move, with loops and inter passing was stopped by a Cumbo tackle on Wright.
At last Kavallieri could attack from possession from a poor clearance kick, and the move was stopped by an offside tackle which won a yellow card sin bin visit.
The ensuing Kavallieri pressure caused a further yellow card for complaining to the referee, and suddenly Overseas were down to 13 men. Inevitably Fiore pulled a score back with a try in the corner, which he failed to convert.
Amazingly Overseas became the spirited side as they were inspired by hardship and actually outplayed Kavallieri in the forwards in the last few minutes.
They are clearly determined to hold on to the Mediterranean Bank Cup.
MIA Cup
A very young and inexperienced Kavallieri side managed to give Falcons quite a shock and were more penetrative when they managed to win possession.
Falcons relied on their heavy, strong and experienced forwards to win the majority of possession, but were a little lucky as their first try seemed to be a knock on.
