Aaron Mifsud (Pembroke Athleta ) and Carmen Hili (St. Patrick’s AC) won the ninth edition of the Birkirkara St. Joseph 5K Road Running Series 2011, in the fourth race held last Tuesday at Mtarfa.
Aaron Mifsud, finishing fourth on the day, won the Series in an accumulated time of 49 minutes, 45 seconds. In the females category, Hili’s time was 56 minutes 29 seconds.
The final race however belonged to the Italian Vincenzo Scuro (AS Libertas) who won comfortably in a time of 16 minutes, 9 seconds, ahead of Clive Gerada (St. Patrick’s AC) who clocked 16 minutes 31 seconds and Mario Grech (St. Patrick’s AC) who finished third in 16 minutes 34 seconds.
Overall winner Aaron Mifsud was fourth in 16 minutes, 36 seconds.
In the females category, Carmen Hili took the crown with a victory in the final race, finishing the 5 kilometres in 18 minutes, 45 seconds. Title contender Angele Sammut (St. Patrick’s AC) could not keep the pace and finished second in 19 minutes, 44 seconds, 17 seconds in front of veteran Cecilia Fenech (Zurrieq Wolves).
The Birkirkara St. Joseph 5K Road Running Series is held over four 5-kilometre races, and organised under the auspices of the Malta Amateur Athletic Association.
The 13 December race brought to a successful end the calendar of events organised annually by Birkirkara St. Joseph Sports Club.
This calendar includes a series of open water swimming, a triathlon series, a road running series, the Gozo-Malta and the Malta-Gozo-Malta Open Water Swimming Races, and a cycling time trial.
