Everything seems to have gone quiet in Libya. For months on end, the international and local news crews chased the story about Gaddafi and his sons being removed from power. Even when he was caught, the media interest was still very high, as evidenced by the coverage given to the Prime Minister’s visit by most of the local media. But what has happened? Everyone was worried about Islamic extremists, as well as oil exploration and the phenomenon of illegal immigration. Now it is silent. Have Libya’s problems been swept away with a magic wand? Or is this a case of out of sight, out of mind. Libya is still our southern neighbour and Libyans are still in strife. The vacuum has not been filled completely and we should keep the situation monitored. Else, we might end up being surprised by developments.
