San Giljan won the Under 15 Winter League after ending up winners of a round robin decider tournament which also involved Sirens and Sliema.
This was a great success for the Club’s junior sector and indeed for the whole club which had been chasing a junior title for quite a while after the revamp of the junior sector three years ago.
This sector has gone quite a long way and intends building on this success to be among the protagonists in local waterpolo.
All the boys and their coaches were showered with praise for this success which witnessed the sterling work that was done in the last three years.
In the meantime the Under 17 team of the club finished that category’s Winter League as runners-up. This is another remarkable result considering that all players of the squad are U-16s with several players who are even younger. Moreover, the senior players that make up the squad played this league while undergoing very intensive land training with the senior team.
Another positive aspect in both leagues was the introduction of new faces namely goalie Daniel Spiteri and players Ben Plumpton and Darren Zammit who all seem to have integrated very well with the rest of the team.
In the final part of the leagues both age groups were strengthemed by the inclusion of player Anthony Bugeja who was returning from a two month training stage in Hungary.
All in all a very positive first part of the season for all the squad which, besides playing in the Winter League, also trained very hard during training sessions where the attendance by the boys was also very encouraging.
The teams were coached by Kurt Dowling and Dean Camilleri while club head coach Karl Izzo was always watching proceedings very closely and was in constant communication with the coaching staff and administration of the junior teams.
