The voters in the fifth electoral district did not vote for Franco Debono because he is handsome, or because he is their village lawyer. They did so because he contested on behalf of the Nationalist Party.

Dr Debono would never have made it to Parliament without the Nationalist Party, and therefore he is in the wrong when he thinks that he is bigger than the party on whose ticket he was elected.

If he does not want to toe the party line, then he is no longer a representative of the Nationalist voters who put him where he is.

The only honourable way out for him is to give up that seat now before he causes any more damage to the country, seeing the instability he has created with all that he has done.
