Matthew Asciak has retained the BOV Malta Men’s Masters Singles Title for 2011 following his victory over Bernard Cassar Torreggiani in the final.
The BOV Malta Men’s Masters tournament was the last event of the Malta Tennis Federation’s calendar for thepast year and was held at the Marsa Sports Club.
The BOV Malta Men’s Masters Singles tournament is a technical assessment of national players in preparation for the team’s international commitments the following year. The tournament featured Malta’s top eight players.
Asciak confirmed his standing as Malta’s top player dropping only two games in the whole tournament.
Edward Muscat Azzopardi, Head Marketing at Bank of Valletta and David Farrugia Sacco, President of the Malta Tennis Federation presented the trophies to the winners.
“Bank of Valletta has become synonymous with local sport and is proud to be associated with the Malta Tennis Federation,” said Muscat Azzopardi while presenting the winner’s trophy to Matthew Asciak. “We are delighted to see a younger generation of tennis players participating in this tournament that will guarantee a high level of tennis in the near future”
Dr David Farrugia Sacco, President of the Federation, said that the event brought together experience and youth, which very much reflected the Federation’s policy of giving the younger players opportunity to gain high level tennis experience. He went on to thank Bank of Valletta for their continued support to the game of tennis and looked forward to many more years of cooperation with the Bank.
In the semifinals, Matthew Asciak topped group A and was subsequently on the victorious side against Denzil Agius in the first semifinal. Bernard Cassar Torregiani surprised Denzil Agius by taking top spot in Group B and ended up taking a walk over in the semi-final versus Raphael Sammut who had to retire from the tournament due to seasonal influenza. Matthew Asciak won the final and during the whole tournament only dropped two games.
A special mention must be made of the much younger Bernard Cassar Torregiani, Raphael Sammut and Mark Schranz aged 15 and under who performed very well during the tournament.
