On Wednesday, Malta obtained a clean bill of health from the European Commission with regard to its public finances.

It was one piece of good news for Malta, as the Commission deemed that the efforts made by the government were “effective” enough for Malta to avoid sanctions which would have cost money and, perhaps worse, would have given Malta a bad image on the international scene.

It is quite ironic that the government was given this positive news at a time when it is facing a political crisis just because one of its MPs did not agree with the way the Prime Minister carried out a reshuffle in the Cabinet.

I hope that this impasse will be sorted out as quickly as possible so that the government will be able to concentrate on the more important issues – dealing with the worsening economic situation in neighbouring countries, which could have a serious impact on our everyday lives.
